Let’s start with a baseline - the world is not what it could be.
I like to think we all know this but there are huge swaths of the population who seem not to be aware of it at all. They seem to think ‘the world is how it is, it’s how it has always been, it is how it will always be.’ And worst of all they are okay with that.
I applaud that on one level - after all, I’m a Baoist. Acceptance is a big part of that. I like Stoicism even if it does seem to have been sort of hijacked by man-bun wearing fitness bros who wear yoga pants under their Carhardts work wear. (No wonder I don't have any fans, I just lost all the man-bunny guys in a single sentence).
Stoicism and man-bunny types aside - I like to think about a better world. I’m not the only one. Thinkers have been envisioning what the world might be like for thousands of years - and often that ends up being a model for the future we actually get. Cause and effect in action. I wrote a book that carries a pretty amazing blueprint for the future. It demonstrated a lot of the ideas that I talk about in other places.
Notes from Nowhere is a book I wrote in 2020. At the time, I thought that blockchain publishing might be the future of books, so I signed a contract with a company that made big promises and when the NFT economy dried up, definitely didn’t deliver. I wasn’t happy with their marketing, their promotion, or the product they delivered. It’s still there and some of you even own copies. I didn’t make any money from it. I have no idea if they made money. The money I made was all donated to the Hawaii Mutual Aid Society to help the victims of the devastating Lahaina Fires.
I make art not money. I create ideas not profit motives. The NFT art was created by my friend Femmebot. It never got delivered the way that we had agreed. So here is what is happening. I’m publishing the audio book version for my paid subscribers. If you aren’t a paid subscriber here but would like a PDF copy to read - please share this post with some friends and take a screenshot of your personal message to them and DM me. I’ll send you a PDF to read. If you want to hear me read the book (yeah, that’s me) then you’ll need to become a paid subscriber here or go buy the NFT book at Creatokia. It’s blockchain and immutable, so there is no changing my name there and I’m too lazy to make new recordings, but you know who I am. So here I am using my paperwork name again. Already, I’m seeing how hard it is to redefine yourself and still hold onto your lifetime of work - maybe that’s the issue. Oh well. I’ve got gardening to do - in a metaphorical and literal sense.
Let’s see how the world could be…and then let’s discuss how we get there.
